Morgan book part of journey
A former Maori Party candidate says economist Gareth Morgan is only saying what Maori have been saying for years, without getting on the front page of the newspapers.
Mr Morgan went to Ratana Pa yesterday to talk about some of the themes of his new book, Are We There Yet? Which argues that the Treaty of Waitangi needs to be honoured through constitutional change that delivers true co-governance.
Chris McKenzie, who was at Ratana, says he doesn’t disagree with Mr Morgan’s sentiment even if he doesn’t agree with some of the ways he expressed it.
"I guess it’s nice a non-Maori has said it but we can't keep using the hammer to hit people over the head. I think over the past 10 years we've gotten closer to a country that is starting to accept and acknowledge a kaupapa Maori within this country and we just need to push on with that journey and these kinds of debate are good to assist that journey," he says.
