Speaking a human rights issue
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox would like to see Maori have a conversation about the role of women in their society.
Ms Fox and fellow Justice and Electoral Committee members Jono Naylor and Peeni Henare are at a regional human rights seminar in Manila, organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Philippines Senate and the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights.
She will speak on the promotion of women’s rights in the region.
She says while things are relatively good in New Zealand compared with other countries where battles are still to be fought on issues like reproductive rights, there are some practices that raise eyebrows, such as denying speaking rights on the marae.
Marama Fox says she understands the cultural reasons for the practice, but the cultural conditions no longer exist.
