Treaty commemoration part of healing for Ngati Paoa
A negotiator for Ngati Paoa says yesterday’s treaty commemoration was part of the healing process the Auckland and Hauraki iwi needs to go through.
The commemoration was on the same spot on the banks of the Tamaki River at Glendowie where rangatira from Tamaki Makaurau signed the treaty on March 4, 1840.
Te Hauauru Rawiri says Ngati Paoa wanted to acknowledge the intent of those ancestors.
It also wanted to mark the fact settlement of historic claims includes both a physical and a spiritual healing of the past.
" You know we carry that mana. So yesterday was part and parcel of a spiritual process to help , ka whakamoea, to help put that mamae in that particular place to enable our next generation to be free. To be able to do what they need to do " he says.
Te Hauauru Rawiri says the settlement negotiations should be completed this year.
