Flag process upside down says Peters
New Zealand First leader and Northland candidate Winston Peters says the flag referendum is being held back to front as a way to make New Zealanders think change is inevitable.
A 12-member panel has been appointed to consult the public and choose four options, which will then be put to a referendum.
The winning option will then be put up against the existing flag in a second referendum.
Mr Peters says that should actually be the first question.
"I'm criticising the Government and the prime minister for avoiding the first question, 'do you want a flag change yes or no?' Why would that be the case? Because it's Mr Key's idea, it's his fetish. He started off with a flag that looked pretty much like ISIS. He dropped that like a hot scone," he says.
Winston Peters says the flag debate is a deliberate diversion from real issues like housing, jobs and decent incomes, which he will be raising in the by-election.
