Northland job growth a sham – Peters
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says the Northland voters have a chance to tell National to start listening.
Mr Peters is contesting the by-election on the March 28 brought on by the resignation of National MP Mike Sabin for personal reasons.
National has given the task of holding the seat to Far North District Council employee and business owner Mark Osborne.
But Mr Peters says his nomination acceptance speech where he praised National’s economic record shows Mr Osborne cares more for party spin than the needs of Northlanders.
"When people tell me the Norhtland economy is booming, I have never heard such lies in all my life. Take for example the claim they have created 7500 jobs in Northland. There is not a person in the north who looks around their town who would believe any of that rubbish. These are ghost jobs. If you have just one hour's work a week they take you off the unemplymnet register and call you employed. For a family trying to get by, this is an appalling sham," he says.
Mr Peters says by-elections need to be looked at differently than the general election, and people may vote in different ways to normal.
Nomination close today, with Labour, ACT and Mana also fielding candidates.
