Fleet upgrade gives jobs to kiwis
The head of Aotearoa Fisheries says a fleet refurbishment plan means boat building jobs will stay in New Zealand and the company’s contract fishers will have more efficient and environmentally sustainable vessel.
The iwi-owned company yesterday signed a deal under which Nelson boatbuilder Aimex will build a 24 metre trawler for Tauranga-based family fishing company RMD.
Carl Carrington says guaranteed long-term access to Aotearoa’s quota means RMD can get bank loans to fund the boat.
He says finding a New Zealand boatbuilder was critical for the project, which will eventually see at least six boats built.
Carl Carrington says the new boat will be able to handle the new precision seafood harvesting net technology now being developed.
