Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says the Teina Pora case highlights the need for an inquiry into institutional racism in the justice system – as well as an independent body to review alleged miscarriages of justice.
The Privy Council this week quashed Mr Pora’s conviction for the 1992 rape and murder of south Auckland woman Susan Burdett.
Ms Fox says it’s wonderful Mr Pora is free after more than 20 years in jail.
She says it’s the last case to go before the Privy Council, so an alternative is needed.
