Aquaculture on future menu
Maori fisheries delegates have been encouraged to set their sights on developing their iwi’s aquaculture potential.
Aquaculture industry veteran Harry Mikaere from Hauraki told the annual Maori Fisheries Conference in Auckland yesterday that demand for farmed marine products like mussels, oysters, salmon and finfish was set to grow.
He says looking at the big picture of food and protein demand, land farming wasn’t enough to meet world demand.
"The production from Papatuanuku, given the new populations that are coming through over the next three decades, we understand a lot of the new protein will come out of the sea. That gives you an indication of just what is required of us to meet that demand in terms of being able to become more actively involved in aquaculture, and that goes for all of our iwi throughout Aotearoa," Mr Mikaere says.
He says iwi need good scientific advice on what is a complex and high risk industry, and they need good business structures so iwi resources are managed effectively.
