Miraka wins export prize
Maori-owned milk processor Miraka has won the inaugural He kai kei aku ringa award for Maori Excellence in Export.
The tohu, which was part of the New Zealand International Business Awards, was awarded last night at an event at Auckland’s SkyCity Convention Centre.
The company, which is based at Mokai near Taupo, uses steam from nearby geothermal steam fields to operate the plant.
Miraka’s whole milk powder factory produces 37,000 tonnes a year, and last year it built two UHT or ultra heat treatment milk production lines.
Chief executive Richard Wyeth says 99 percent of its production is exported to 23 countries.
He says Maori customs and the values of tikanga, kaitiakitanga, innovation, excellence and integrity are an integral part of Miraka’s operations.
