Far north iwi Te Rarawa is considering buying a waka to help a noble cause.
Te Tai Tokerau Tarai Waka is selling a waka built by Hekenukumai Busby to raise funds for a new wananga at Aurere on Doubtless Bay, which will teach canoe building and traditional navigation under the auspices of the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute.
Te Rarawa chair Haami Piripi says Mr Busby is the tribe’s most esteemed elder and tohunga, and he’s putting together a business case to make a bid.
Haami Piripi says it could cost almost $200,000 to build a similar waka.
