Porter uses mayoral platform to push for change
Ahipara activist Rueben Taipari Porter aims to shake up the Far North mayoral contest.
Mr Porter says he is standing for mayor because he is alarmed by the lack of accountability to people in the region by local and central government.
He says he is sick of businessmen making political decisions that affect real people and their families.
Mr Porter has campaigned in the past on environmental, social and Māori issues.
Current mayor Wayne Brown hasn’t confirmed whether he will stand again, but former Northland MP John Carter, the current High Commissioner to the Cook Islands, has put his name in the ring and is expected back to start campaigning next week.
