Extra Northland MP in offing
Meanwhile, Northland is poised to pick up two new MPs as a result of Saturday’s New Zealand First victory.
Winston Peters this morning confirmed he will stand down from the list, allowing the party to bring in a another MP.
There has been speculation he might forego that option because of concern about the quality of candidates, but he now says there was never a question that he would resign.
The next on the New Zealand First list is Ria Bond from Northland hapu Ngati Hine.
While she is usually described as an Invercargill hairdresser, Ms Bond says it’s a career she chose because she couldn’t afford to go to university.
She served for six years as the president of the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers, and after the election moved to Wellington where she is working in parliament as an executive assistant to New Zealand First MPs Mahesh Bindra and Richard Prosser.
