Aboriginals to be made homeless
A policy to force Australian Aboriginal people out of remote communities is being decried as racist and short-sighted.
Maori in Western Australia have joined tangata whenua in protesting the state’s plan to cut funds for power, water and other services from what could be more than 150 communities.
It comes after the Abbott Government passed responsibility for the communities from the federal to state governments.
Reporter Marlia Fatnowna from CAAMA, the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association, says it ignores research that indigenous people growing up on their own homelands have better life outcomes.
It's a real worry when you look at what the outcomes will be, more homelessness, more burden on the health system, on welfare systems in the future because taking people out of the country have never worked before and we are starting to ask why aren't the government learning from past mistakes " she says.
Marlia Fatnowna says no provision is being made for what will happen to the people once they are forced to leave their communities.
