Peters rejects Maori treaty socialism
New Northland MP Winston Peters has struck at a claim by a far north iwi leader he wasn’t a Maori politician.
Haami Piripi from Te Rarawa says Maori in Tai Tokerau shouldn’t expect much from a politician whose party tried to legislate references to the Treaty of Waitangi out of New Zealand laws.
Mr Peters says that’s shortsighted.
"Haami wants to remember the difference between his idea of socialism for Maori and my idea of advancement for Maori and I am proud of what my stand is because my stand takes Maori into equality. His stand takes Maori into inequality and servitude and second class citizenship," he says.
Mr Peters says Mr Piripi seems to have forgotten the help he gave him when running the Maori Language Commission to foster international relationships.
