Gisborne strong in secondary waka ama
East Coast dominance of waka ama national competitions looks set to continue, going on the results of last week's ActivePost Secondary School Waka Ama championships on Rotorua's Tikitapu.
Gisborne's Lytton High School's Under 16 girls W6 crew took gold in the 250m and 500m races, and Gisborne Girls High School achieved the same in the Under 19 Division.
The Under 16 500m W6 championship title went to Gisborne Boys High School.
St Patricks College, Silverstream took its first medal in the event, winning the under 19 250m Boys W6 Championship Final in a record 53.09 seconds.
Waka Ama New Zealand Chief Executive Lara Collins says there was some of the most thrilling racing she’d seen in the regatta’s 14 year history, with teams displaying true grit and determination.
This year 95 schools entered one, six or twelve paddler teams, confirming waka ama as the fastest growing water sport in New Zealand.
