Big settlement for Ngati Hineuru
Whanau from Ngati Hineuru northwest of Napier gathered at parliament today to sign the settlement of their historic claims.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson says the claims relate primarily to war and raupatu, the operation of the native land laws, and Crown land purchasing that left the hapu virtually landless.
The settlement means that Ngati Hineuru, whose rohe is in the Te Haroto area of the Napier-Taupo Road, will be officially recognized as an iwi.
With only about 1500 registered members, it’s one of the largest settlements so far per capita.
It includes financial and commercial redress of $25 million as well as cultural redress including a $2 million cultural fund.
The iwi will also receive part of the Esk Forest and $16 million as its share of the Central North Island Forestry Settlement.
