National Library opens floor for Maori war stories
The National Library in Wellington is celebrating the art of story-telling with an ANZAC Day session of Te Reo Wainene O Tua – The Sweet Story of Yester-year.
The focus of the free, family-friendly event will be Maori participation in World War One and other campaigns.
Coordinator Lee Timutimu has chosen four presenters with some unique tales of the Anzac experience – curator Puawai Cairns, 28 Maori Battalion website administrator Leanne Tamaki, Alexander Turnbull Library oral history advisor Taina McGregor and Department of Conservation deputy director general Tata Lawton.
Public programmes manager Peter Rowlands says storytelling as an art needs to be treasured.
Te Reo Wainene O Tua starts at 10 at the library and runs until noon.
