Celebration of Maori golf
The National Maori Golf Tournament winds up in Taupo today after a week where whanau has been to the fore, with koro acting as caddies for mokopuna aspiring to be the next Michael Campbell or Tiger Woods.
Organising committee member Aroha Tito, who won the tournament when she was 15, says it’s been a positive tournament despite a rain-soaked first day.
She says there should be a couple of great finals today, with two time winner Kate Chadwick playing her Hawkes Bay teammate Lucy Owen in the women’s division.
In the senior men the competition was between two youngsters, Jordan Golding for Omanu and Nathaniel Cassidy from Tokoroa.
The tournament finishes tonight with an awards dinner at the Great Lakes Centre, where many past winners will be inducted into a new Maori Golf Hall of Fame.
