Iti show marks new beginning
The fruits of a collaboration between Tame Iti and internationally recognised photographer Birgit Krippner will go on show at Suite gallery in Wellington next month.
The show “Iti” – a word meaning “humbleness” or “in the background” – will include paintings and sculptures the Tuhoe activist and artist has made since his release from prison as well as Krippner’s photographs of Iti, other Tuhoe people and Te Urewera.
The Austrian born, Wellington-based photographer says the work documents the promise of new beginnings.
She says the paintings were made at an important time in Tuhoe's history, when it got its spiritual home Te Urewera returned in a treaty settlement that marks the transition from grievance to a future promising greater opportunity and self-determination.
Krippner will exhibit her Iti photographs at the Harvey Milk Photographic Center in San Francisco in April.
Iti opens at {Suite} on February 19 and runs until March 7.
