Waitangi term limit alarms Ngapuhi MP
There’s dissatisfaction in the Maori Affairs select committee about proposed changes to the composition of the Waitangi National Trust.
The committee has reported back with a recommendation the composition of the board be expanded to include a four seat for the descendants of Hone Heke, Kawiti, Tamati Waka Nene and Pomare.
It also wants to limit board members to three three-year terms.
But Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare, whose grandfather the late Sir James Henare served 49 years on the trust, says that’s not necessary.
"While I’m all for making sure we've got a new generation coming through, it's sadly a move towards the corporatisaiton of our national asset. It's a national taonga, and what they are trying to do is push it towards a sort of fiscal accountability and a business model that I believe doesn't work in the best interests of the entire country," he says.
