Negotiators get sign off for talks
The Crown has indicated it is ready to start formal talks on a settlement for Ngapuhi historic claims.
It has signed terms of negotiation with Tuhoronuku Independent Mandated Authority, the body set up by Te Runanga o Ngapuhi to advance the settlement.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson said the crown can now start genuine conversations with hapu about their specific concerns and work towards a settlement that will provide all Ngapuhi with a strong social and economic platform for the future.
Some hapu have objected to being represented by Tuhoronuku, and the Waitangi Tribunal is looking at the Crown’s process in giving it a mandate.
Mr Finlayson said the settlement could include hapu-specific redress is that’s what Ngapuhi wants.
He says signing of terms will not interfere with the tribunal inquiry, and he remains confident that the decision to recognise the mandate was correct.
Making the announcement during celebrations to mark the 20th Anniversary of the signing the Tainui raupatu settlement, he said Tainui provides an excellent example of what an iwi can achieve for its people post-settlement.
