Council keen to develop housing
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the city has land it intends to free up for housing development.
Tamaki Makaurau iwi have expressed interest in being involved in developing some of the 430 hectares of surplus crown land the government intends to sell in the region, much of which they will have a right of first refusal over.
Mr Brown says the council has set up a property company to took at a similar stock of surplus council land.
"Maybe even together with government, if their land sits beside ours, we will go to the market and say we are looking for some affordable housing options or we are looking for some apartment housing options here beside our railway stations or our bus interchanges and what would the market do, and we are using every option and tool that we can to keep that housing build going," he says.
Len Brown says other changes in the budget such as taxing profits on investment properties sold within two years will property in 2 years should improve the supply of housing in the super city.
