Education Council about cutting costs
Labour MP Louisa Wall says the failure to set aside Maori seats on a new Education Council is a sign of the Government’s top down approach.
The regulatory body, which starts work on July 1, replaces the Teachers Council which was elected by teachers.
Education Minister Hekia Parata, who appoints all nine members, says she was disappointed by the low number of Maori nominations.
Ms Wall says there’s a risk it could be like the panel reviewing the Children, Youth and Family Service, which included no Maori, Pasifika or social workers.
"Most of them are managers or systems analysts or economists. It's about the government not involving the sector in anything they do but rather bringing in these external experts which is about creating a system they think will be more cost effective'" she says.
Louisa Wall says the government is obsessed with saving money and privatising, even when it puts people’s welfare at risk.
