Wellington’s inner city lagoon could soon have a new name.
Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust and Wellington City Councii have asked the New Zealand Geographic Board to rename it Whairepo Lagoon.
It’s now commonly known as Frank Kitts Lagoon or just "the lagoon".
Whairepo are the eagle ray that feed and shelter in the lagoon, which mana whenua believe act as kaitiaki ensuring the safety of waka and people in and around the lagoon.
Public consultation on the change will be open until August 28.
