MASSIVE hikoi sets off
The MASSIVE or Men Against Sexual Violence hikoi has set off from west Auckland on its way to Te Rerenga Wairua.
Joining hikoi instigator Kelvin Davis at Trusts Stadium for the start were several fellow Labour MPs, ACT MP David Seymour, Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox and Greens David Clendon and Stefan Browning.
Mr Davis says it’s an issue with broad cross-party and community support.
The hikoi is a great way to reach people on the ground in the 17 days to the far north.
"And we’re just talking and speaking out about sexual violence and the impact it has on people. We're asking them to speak out if they're survivors of sexual violence to tell somebody. We're asking bystanders to intervene. We're asking perpetrators to get help for themselves before they actually cause harm to people" he says.
Kelvin Davis says for the duration of the hikoi there is a helpline operating at 0800 MASSIVE that can put people in touch with the relevant community agency for their needs.
