Good response to rain sodden hikoi
It was a wet and wild weekend, but Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis kept walking through it on his hikoi to raise awareness about sexual violence.
Accompanied by Russell Smith and Joy Te Wiata from advocacy group Korowai Tumanako and a changing cast including fellow MPs, he got as far a the foot of the Brynderwyn Hill.
Because of road works he will spend much of today going round it.
He’s pleased at the response to the Men Against Sexual Violence message from a wide range of New Zealanders.
"We’re deliberately not trying to make this a Maori kaupapa because we don’t want people to think this is a Maori problem. This is a problem that covers all ethnicities, both genders, all socioeconomic levels so it’s not any ethnicity in particular and people just tend to think because it’s a hikoi it’s about a Maori problem and it’s definitely not," Mr Davis says.
