Tau retains runanga top spot
Sonny Tau has retained the chair of Te Runanga a iwi o Ngapuhi.
The runanga’s board met yesterday, a day after Mr Tau was stood down as chair of Tuhoronuku, the body overseeing the tribe’s treaty settlement negotiations.
It says that while it does not condone Mr Tau’s actions in allegedly taking kereru during a visit to Murihiku last month, it acknowledged his leadership over the past 15 years.
The board says the concept of kaitiakitanga is a sacred obligation and it is committed to the environmental safeguard of taonga tuku iho.
It restated its vision: Kia tu Tika ai te whare tapu o Ngapuhi – that the sacred house of Ngapuhi stands firm.
