Nga Pou Wahine a poetic challenge
A revival of Briar Grace-Smith’s one-woman play Nga Pou Wahine wraps up in Auckland tonight before heading for Whangarei and Kaitaia.
It is being performed by Kura Forrester, who is reveling in the challenge of playing the six characters.
The play traces the journey of a young wahine, Te Atakura, as she discovers her true spirit through the stories of her whanau and the dramatic history of her ancestor, Waiora.
Forrester says 20 years on from when Taki Rua Productions first presented the work, it continues to resonae with audiences.
"Briar’s writing is extremely poetic and very rich so I guess one of my challenges is to remember all of the words on a real practical level but also to pay homage to those words as well. Finding a way to connect to each of these characters on a really deep level but still being able to move the story along" she says.
Nga Pou Wahine will be at The Old Library in Whangarei from July the fifth to the seventh and at Te Ahu Centre in Kaitaia on the ninth and tenth.
