Dr Wayne Ngata to chair Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Maori
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has made substantial changes to the board of the Maori Language Commission as he prepares to push through reforms to its role and operations.
A former board member, Dr Wayne Ngata of Ngati Porou, is the new chair replacing the late Erima Henare.
Two new members were appointed, Victoria University school of Maori studies head Professor Rawinia Higgins of Tuhoe and Charisma Rangipuna, who has been closely involved with Ngai Tahu’s language revival strategy.
Both women are members of the Maori Language Advisory Group Mr Flavell appointed to help him revise the Maori Language Bill inherited from his predecessor Pita Sharples.
Awanuiarangi Black and Hinurewa Poutu remain on the board, while Dr Poia Rewi, Dr Ruka Broughton and Dr Katarina Edmond come off.
Minister Flavell says imminent changes proposed in the new Maori Language Bill will require strong leadership by the board.
He says the new appointees collectively possess an excellent combination of skills and experience to undertake the roles and responsibilities required for Te Taura Whiri te Reo Maori.
