Kura a iwi cast wide net for learning
More than 300 principals, teachers, boards of trustees and iwi representatives are at the annual conference of Nga Kura a Iwi in Rotorua today and tomorrow to hear about what is new in indigenous education.
Co-chair Pem Bird says the priority of kura a iwi is to ensure achievement and success for pupils as Maori.
That means building the capacity of teachers, so the conference will hear from international experts like Ralph Pirozzo, a world renowned specialist in differentiated learning, and Valerie Hannon, co-founder of the Innovation Unit in London and a senior consultant to the OECD Innovative Learning Environments programme.
"We have to know whats going on in the greater world. Not all the answers lie in Maori medium education. 90% of the answers might but we have to keep our ears and eyes open and be absolutely open to ideals initiaitves and innovations that come in from overseas. They have a wealth of research behind them " he says.
