Macrons too tough for government sites
Maori Internet Society member Karaitiana Taiuru is upset most government departments, councils and polytechnics still don’t recognise macrons in email addresses.
In 2009 Mr Taiuru lobbied the Domain Name Commissioner to adopt International Domain Names (IDN) technology which allow for the use of non English characters in domain name, including macronised Maori words.
However most organsiations haven’t done the necessary configuration to allow IDN to work.
Mr Taiuru surveyed 158 NZ government department website online contact forms.
He says most would not accept an email with macrons, including Te Puni Kokiri, Te Mangai Paho, the Maori Language Commission Te Taura Whiri and Parliament
