Chinese land speculation – now Pakeha know how it feels to be Maori
MARTYN BRADBURY
Many Maori must be eyeing the current angst from Pakeha that the Chinese are property speculating them out of the housing market with a fair sense of irony.
Now Pakeha know what it feels like to be Maori.
The issues of ownership and disconnection from the land are issues Maori have been wrestling Pakeha for almost 200 years, listening to the same concerns and frustrations has a certain karma about it.
Beyond that though, this 3rd great colonisation could finally be a bridge building event between Pakeha and Maori. What is at stake for both sides when confronted by overseas Chinese property speculation is Tino Rangatiratanga, the ability to politically, culturally and economically determine our own destiny.
This exact same issue is at stake with the American Free Trade TPPA.
How NZ manages to stop China and America from over turning the Waka of Aotearoa is something that requires co-operation and the ability to lesson. Pakeha have much to learn from Maori on this.
