Whanau key to Highlanders’ triumph
Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph is crediting a whanau atmosphere as one of the factors that helped lift the Super 15 championship.
The team has returned to Dunedin heroes after Saturday’s thrilling win against the Hurricanes.
Joseph says even though the team lacks the big stars, it’s got wairua and whanaungatanga.
"We go to the word brotherhood which is whanau really. If you really want to simplify it, it's to create a family environment where everybody feels comfortable to express themselves and there is real equality in our team right from the top with myself, we have aligment on everything that gets done, how it gets done, and I guess that has been the key for us," he says.
The season’s not over for all the players yet … five Highlanders forwards and outside back Kurt Baker will strap their boots on again tomorrow with the Maori All Blacks to take on Suva in Fiji
