The chair of the new Whenuapai Housing Development Partnership says iwi are set to make a major contribution to tackling Auckland’ housing crisis.

The partnership, which brings together Pare Hauraki iwi and the Maori Trustee Te Tumu Paeroa, last week broke the sod for a 49-unit development on land it bought at Whenuapai.

Paul Majurey says the two organisations had developed a close relationship through their development with other Tamaki Makaurau iwi of Waimahia in south Auckland.

The fact the development could be leased to the Defence Force for accommodation for staff serving at Whenuapai made it a sound investment.

Paul Majurey says post-settlement iwi can’t be limited to their own rohe but most invest in the best interests of beneficiaries.

Pare Hauraki is yet to receive its historic treaty settlement so is investing returns from its fisheries and aquaculture settlements.

What does Labour fear from a Maori Prison?
MARTYN 'BOMBER' BRADBURY: The negative reaction by Andrew Little and the Labour leadership at the suggestion of Maori prisons by Kelvin Davis gives an insight into how difficult reforming the public service for Maori will still be even under a Labour Government.
