The process addressing cross claims on treaty settlements has come under fire from Tauranga Moana iwi.

Ngai Te Rangi chair Charlie Tawhiao says the Crown is scrambling to complete settlement claims but in it's haste its trampling on toes.

Tauranga Moana is facing a cross claims challenge from Pare Hauraki and a hikoi held in the weekend saw Tauranga Moana take to the streets reinforcing its rangatiratanga,

Charlie Tawhiao says there's a Maori way to manage cross claims but unfortunately it's not the Crown's way.

"The difficulty is, is that the crown occasionally rides roughshod over the process that are available to us as iwi. To resolve those things in a way that doesn't require the crown to make a determination but of course the crown is on a hiding to nothing whichever way it goes. So it wants to get settlements done quickly and in the process is going to step on some toes to get the job done. By and large they have gotten away with it but come to the point for Tauranga Moana, where we have had to say actually, no, there is more to settlement then getting it done quickly. Getting it done right is more important," he says.

Meanwhile a hearing set down later this month to hear Pare Hauraki claims has been cancelled.
