A Ngāti Pikiao hapū is at Lake Rotoiti today blockading a private boat ramp.

Ngāti Te Takinga says the Bay Of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron's boatramp at Okawa Bay is on land it gave for a public playground.

It says it will maintain a blockade until the gate is removed to allow the ramp to be used by the general public.

The council says the ramp was built in 1974 on land outside the reserve's title and a gate was put across it for safety, as there is a ski lane close to the bay.

Te Arawa Lakes Trust chief executive Roku Mihinui says as the 2006 treaty settlement ceded lake beds back to the iwi, the ramp was on trust land.

Why proclaiming Key as the Politician of the Year is ethically bankrupt
OPINION: It is that time of year when pundits write columns to explain the 'winners' and 'losers' of the political year and already many are proclaiming that Key is this years political winner because he managed to avoid all the allegations of corruption and dirty politics to win an even larger majority than he had.
A Principled Man
OPINION: I was very honoured to be asked to speak in New Plymouth earlier this week by the Mayor of the city Andrew Judd.
How should Waitangi Tribunal ruling on Sovereignty be implemented?
OPINION: I'd like to back track this weeks column to the Waitangi Tribunal ruling that Maori did not sign away their sovereignty in 1840.
