She’s won a lot of plaudits in her long career, but now Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi has a Welly to boot.
The Ngāti Porou stalwart won the education section of this year’s Wellingtonian of the Year Awards or Wellys. She’s had more than 60 years' involvement with Māori education, from school teaching on the East Coast to spearheading Māori immersion education, first as chief executive of Te Kohanga Reo National Trust and then its chair for many years.
