New Zealand’s representative at the last Venice Biennale is one of 17 new professors at Auckland University.

Michael Parekowhai of Te Aitanga-ā-Mahaaki teaches at Elam School of Fine Arts.

Vice-Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon says the promotions recognise professional and academic eminence at an international level.

Professor Parekowhai’s work is held in many significant public and private collections throughout New Zealand and Australia.

The centrepiece of his Venice installation, a carved piano, was bought last year by Te Papa Tongarewa for a reputed $1.5 million.
