Landmark day for Taranaki Whanui
Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust chair Wayne Mulligan says Taranaki Whanui wants to create a global landmark on its Shelly Bay site.
The Trust has got the tick from Wellington Council for its joint venture with property developer Ian Cassels to develop apartments, houses, shops, a boutique hotel, a rest home, and other businesses on the former defence base it bought with the bulk of its treaty settlement cash.
The council is now consulting on whether it should sell or lease to the joint venture the 1 hectare it owns in the middle of the harbourside site.
Mr Mulligan says that land is critical for the success of the project,
"This has got to be designed really well and we have put a lot of thought into the design and that's why the council see the big plan and what we can create for Wellington is not just regenerating Shelly Bay but making it a place where is is going to generate a lot of opportunities for Wellingtonians and for my iwi Taranaki Whanui, Te Atiawa ki Whanganui a Tara so we are pretty focused on that," he says.
