Moana tackles mental strain with King hit
Maori-owned seafood company Moana has called in entertainer and mental health campaigner Mike King to promote mental wellness.
Chief executive Carl Carrington says people are the life force of the company and he wants staff to have effective tools to handle stress, depression and mental illness.
Mr King started his roadshow today at the company's Coromandel plant with a two hour session on depression – why it's hard to recognise, what helps, and what are the treatments for it.
Mr Carrington says Moana’s people work hard for themselves and their families, and their mental wellness can be affected by the nature of their job – for example if they are away fishing for extended periods of time.
He says the company felt it needed to do something given that one in six New Zealand adults diagnosed with a mental illness at some point in their lives, New Zealand's young people and teens have the worst suicide rates in the world and that Maori and Pacific people are over represented in mental health statistics.
