Waikato Tainui ups hotel investment
Tainui Group Holdings is set to add 40 rooms to its Novotel Tainui Hamilton hotel.
Rukumoana Schaafhausen, the chair of Waikato Tainui's Te Arataura, says the expansion is a statement of confidence in the economic future of Hamilton, Waikato and the Iwi.
It also means more work opportunities for tribe members both from the expansion and the wider growth in the tourism sector.
TGH chief executive Chris Joblin says the $13 million investment will mean the hotel can offer 217 rooms and suites, ensuring Hamilton has a hotel of the quality and scale to match demand as the city grows.
Construction of the new four-storey building is expected to start in mid-2018, with the opening scheduled for mid-2019.
The company also recently opened the Puurua TGH Partner Centre in Victoria Street near the Hamilton CBD.
The 4.5 star-rated Novotel Tainui Hamilton opened in 1999 and is operated by AccorHotels.
Waikato-Tainui also owns the 126 room ibis Hamilton Tainui hotel.
It has a half share in the 263 room Novotel Auckland Airport, with a fourth hotel, Pullman Auckland Airport – Te Arikinui under development with Auckland International Airport Ltd.
