Accolades due for efforts in te reo
The Maori Language Commission Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Maori has chosen 23 finalists from a record 100 nominations for this year’s national Maori language awards.
Chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says the awards recognise not just initiatives and activities which took place during the year, they are also an opportunity to acknowledge long-term commitment by individuals and groups to Maori language revitalisation.
The award from the best contribution to Maori Language Week is between two law firms, Kensington Swan and Wackrow Williams and Davies, and Radio New Zealand.
The individual award is between Kahungunu language advocate Jeremy Tatere McLeod, academic Paraone Gloyne and retired educators Hiwi and Patricia Tauroa.
The awards will be given at a gala dinner at Te Papa in Wellington on November 24.
