Time for Maori Party to stop preaching to choir
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says it’s time to stop preaching to the converted and reach out to a wider range of Maori.
The party held a hui over the weekend to assess its election defeat and look to the future.
Ms Fox says she, Te Ururoa Flavell and president Tukuroirangi Morgan committed to stay in their roles for the moment to provide continuity as the party rebuilds.
She says New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has shown the importance of having a wide enough support base to be able to come back from political adversity.
"It’s a movement of the people. It's about kaupapa Maori. It's about rangatiratanga. But 90 percent of our whanau don't live in that kaupapa Maori environment because they live in the mainstream society we all grew up in so we actually need to stop talking to the converted and start growing political literacy with our wider whanau," Ms Fox says.
She is also trying to set up a house building company.
