Whakatane District Council has voted six to five for Maori wards.
Mayor Tony Bonne says it’s important to foster strong and meaningful relationships with Maori across the district and ensure te ao Maori is recognised and supported at the council table.
He says as mayor he has had the opportunity and privilege to engage with Maori on a number of partnerships, and having Maori councillors is a continuation of work to foster growth and positive relationships within the rohe.
The next step is give public notice of the right of electors to demand a binding referendum on whether the proposal should go ahead.
