Marae encouraging neighbours with garden project
A Mangere marae is encouraging its neighbours to turn their backyards into food-producing gardens.
Papatuanuku Kokiri Marae spokesperson Valerie Teraitu says the My Backyard Garden Project is timed to coincide with the shift in Manukau from rubbish bags to wheelie bins … with residents encouraged to compost food and garden waste rather than bin it.
"We’re providing a korowai to whanau, bringing enlightenment around ways they can prevent food waste and also how we compost it, how we put that food waste into the soil so it becomes as pure as we can get and we can grow more kai and put more food on the table," she says.
More than 100 families have signed up for the workshop.
