Maungapohatu trek puts seal on pardon promise
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says an agreement signed with descendants of Rua Kenana at Maungapohatu on Saturday pave the way for a statutory pardon for the Tuhoe prophet and leader after the election.
The Crown intends to introduce new legislation that includes a summary of the circumstances surrounding the 1916 invasion of Kenana’s remote settlement in Te Urewera, a Crown apology and a declaration to restore the character, mana and reputation of Rua Kenana, his descendants and followers of the Iharaira Faith.
