It will be reunion time for members of 1970s activist group Nga Tamatoa at the University of Waikato this week.

Ripeka Evans, Tame Iti, Des Kahotea, Morehu McDonald, John Ohia, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, and Toro Waaka will take part in a panel for the university’s annual celebration of Kingitanga on Thursday, reflecting on their aspirations, motivations, political philosophies and actions.

Another panel will feature Taranaki members Puna Wano-Bryant, Ruakere Hond, Wharehoka Wano, Whakaarahia Kukutai, and Hemi Sundgren discussing the reconciliation ceremony He Puanga Haeata held between the Crown and Parihaka in June.

Deputy vice-chancellor Maori Sarah-Jane Tiakiwai says the theme for the day is the Kingitanga motto Ko te mana Maori motuhake.

There will also be a seminar on Maori data sovereignty, entertainment and kapa haka, competitions, and bus tours off campus to sites of significance for the Kingitanga.
