Carvings for EIT house after 23-year wait
Ngati Kahungunu carvers Te Rangi Robin and Emanuel Dunn have started a two and a half year project to carve 40 pou for Te Ara o Tawhaki marae on the Eastern Institute of Technology’s Hastings campus.
Mr Robin says because it’s for an educational institution the pou will depict gods and significant historical moments rather than ancestors.
Mr Robin worked on carvings for the outside of the wharenui when it opened more than 20 years ago.
They’re using customwood rather than native timbers for the interior panels.
