Partnership boosts Maori midwife numbers
More than one in five of those studying midwifery in south Auckland are Maori thanks to a joint initiative between Counties Manukau Health, the Tindall Foundation and the Auckland University of Technology.
Pu Ora Matatini today awarded scholarships to top students Camille Harris, Carleen Paterson, Natasha Paul and Maia Wharekura in recognition of their academic success and commitment to the advancement of Maori communities.
Since 2015 Pu Ora has also funded an onsite coordinator at the AUT Southern Campus in Manukau.
This helped boost the number of Maori midwifery students from 35 or 14.2 percent of the total students in 2015 to 58 or 22.7 percent this year.
