Maori teens pressured for nude pix
A Maori digital advocate has found rangatahi Maori are more likely to be asked for nude images of themselves than Pakeha, Pasifika, Asian and others who identify as another ethnicity.
Karaitiana Taiuru says based on his analysis of data used for a NetSafe report Teens and Sexting in New Zealand, Maori teens are also more likely to be sent unsolicited nude images than any other ethnicity.
At the same time, Maori teens are less likely than Pakeha to think it’s okay to send or ask for nude images, and less likely to agree that sharing nude pictures of themselves is a good way to explore themselves as they grow up.
Mr Taiuru says he’d like to see further research using kaupapa Maori research methodology to determine how vulnerable Maori children are to sexting and other online threats.
It could also ask if there are differences between Maori children who are immersed in to ao Maori compared to other Maori children, as this would allow better targeted resources to be created.
